For cases in which the date and time of conception are known, such as when in vitro fertilization is used, the EDD can be calculated by adding 266 additional days to the date and time of conception. Ultrasound uses the fetus's size to determine the gestational time (the amount of time since the last period). The accuracy of the ultrasound estimation of the gestational date varies depending on the gestational period.
